What it does

Few knobs. Deep machine.

Chapter one · PERFORM A · B

One knob moves everything.

The first two big knobs are performance macros. PERFORM A and PERFORM B each drive up to eight targets you choose — every one with its own amount, negative too, and its own start point, so a target only kicks in once the knob passes it. One turn opens the filter, pushes the fold, throws the delay and thickens the grain cloud, each at its own moment. Every preset arrives with both already mapped. The other six take the essentials: FOLD drives the shaper, CUTOFF and ACID take the filters from clean to screaming, DECAY goes from tick to drone, SPACE from dub delay to warehouse, PUMP ducks on every quarter.

Chapter two · The sequencer

Patterns in seconds, never the same twice.

Rhythm, notes and accents each run their own length, up to 64 steps on four pages — 16 against 5 against 3. EUCLID spreads the hits, ROLL bends ratchets into rolls that speed up or bounce. Probability per step, DENSITY for ghost notes, MUTATE for new notes on the same groove, DICE for a new groove. New: TRIG CONDITIONS — a step plays only every second time round (1:2), on the third of four (3:4), only in the fill or only on the first pass — so a four-bar loop keeps changing. MIDI OUT sends the sequence on to any other synth. Eight patterns, switched on the next bar.

Chapter two, part two · Phrases

Four bars or two hundred fifty-six.

PHRASE sets when every lane starts again — 4, 8, 16, 64, 256 bars, or 3, 5, 7 to make it polyrhythmic. AUTO MUTATE moves a few notes every few bars and lets the phrase drift, PHRASE FILL rolls the last bar into the drop, and a PHRASE ramp can open the filter across all 64 bars.

Chapter three · Mono or chords

Acid lines or dub chords — one switch.

MONO slides and accents like a 303. PARA turns every step into a chord stab of up to four voices, from a fifth to a minor ninth. Eight scales keep it in key, and parameter locks give every step its own knob settings.

Chapter three, part two · The 303 bank

A whole bank of acid.

PHONOLITH 3.3 carries a whole category called 303 — over fifty acid lines from Chicago 1987 to hard acid at 150, each built on the new ACID oscillator and the DIODE or SCREAM filter. Slides, accents and that squelch: CUTOFF low, ACID high, DECAY short. Every line comes with trig conditions that keep it moving, PERFORM A to build the acid and PERFORM B to tear it apart. Inspired by the little silver box from 1981 — not a clone of it.

Chapter four · The engine

Two oscillators, two filters, wired like a modular.

Oscillator A in ten modes: FM, WAVE (sixteen wavetables), SUPER (seven saws), SYNC, STRING (Karplus pluck) and NOISE — plus PERC, VOCAL, METAL and the new ACID. PERC is a kick, tom or zap with its own pitch drop and click. VOCAL is a formant voice that sings U, O, A, E and I. METAL stacks six square waves the 808 way into cymbals and clangs. ACID is the 303 core: TONE sweeps from saw to square, GRIT adds the rubbery bend of the original. Oscillator A has its own TONE and GRIT, plus OCTAVE, FINE and LEVEL; the SUB drops one or two octaves, sine or square, and the noise has a colour. Oscillator B sounds or only modulates — X-FM, X-RING and SYNC at audio rate. Two filters from ten types, among them a DIODE ladder in the spirit of the 303, SCREAM for the shriek, VOWEL, PHASER and COMB, run serial, parallel or split, with audio-rate filter FM and a feedback loop. And ACID screams like a 303 pushed too far: turn it up and the resonance bites back. DRIFT detunes every note a little like an old analogue, SPREAD pulls the sound wide, and DICE SOUND rolls a whole new patch in one click.

Chapter five · The PATCH page

Sixteen cables. Modulate the modulation.

Four LFOs, synced to the bar or free up to audio rate, with smooth random and CHAOS. Two function envelopes in the spirit of Maths — rise, fall, loop. Then the PATCH page: sixteen cables from any source to any target, and each cable has a VIA that scales it — an LFO that only breathes when the envelope opens, a filter FM that follows velocity, a modulation that is itself modulated.

Chapter six · Tape delay and FX

A dub tape delay, three rooms, a grain cloud.

The TAPE DELAY comes in six pictures: TAPE, DUB ping-pong, CLEAN, WIDE with different times left and right, SLAP for a short slapback in the middle, and SWEEP, where every echo wanders to a new place in the stereo field. It sits softer behind the sound than before. WOBBLE adds wow and flutter, DIRT adds saturation, hiss and repeats that get darker each time round — and the dub feedback is allowed to take off on its own. After it, pick a reverb: DARK HALL for the warehouse, SPRING for the dub tank, GATED for a short, metallic room. GRAIN smears the sound into grains or freezes it, with octave shimmer, scatter and grains that play backwards. REVERSE flips the signal in time with the beat, TRANCE GATE chops it in eight patterns, and the new GLITCH jumps and repeats slices on the sixteenth grid. Further down the rack: ring modulator and a frequency shifter with barberpole feedback, flanger, chorus, crush and a resonator.

Chapter six, part two · Six pads

Hold, play, let go.

Six pads you hold, not toggle. FILL makes everything roll — as ROLL, RAMP, TRIPLET or BROKEN, on the groove in eighths and sixteenths, never a machine-gun rattle — and opens the filter as it goes. STUTTER repeats on the grid. BUILD lifts the synth over one to eight bars. IMPACT is the new one: hold it and a noise riser climbs while the low end drains away, let go and the hit lands — a deep boom with a crash, bigger the longer you held. THROW hurls the sound into the tape delay for a dub throw, FREEZE locks the last beat into a loop on the next sixteenth. Let go, and the drop lands.

Chapter seven · 303 presets

303 presets. Of course.

303 sounds in twelve groups: the new 303 bank, ACID, BASS, STAB, SEQ, PERC, IND, DRONE, FX, LONG, MODULAR and PERFORM. Each comes with its own pattern and phrase, seven variations ready on the pattern buttons — and PERFORM A and B already mapped, so the first turn already does something. The LONG group runs polyrhythmic lines and phrases up to 256 bars.
